Last week's speaker, Peggy Woodruff, President of the board of BASES, updated us on the charity. BASES, is a charity that funds out-of-school and after school programs for children and youth in Burnaby and New Westminster public schools to support academic, physical and personal growth. Funds are raised through the operation of a thrift store. Since its inception in 2013, the charity has funded over $1,000,000 worth of programs. A wide range of programs are funded: Sprouting chefs, Young Rembrandts, Babysitter's Training, Food Safe, Robotics, Book club, Multi-Sport, Professor Puffin, Python coding, to name a few. The Rotary Club of Burnaby - Deer Lake provided some of the seed money to start the thrift store and the members have volunteered their time to provide painting, set up displays, price goods and provide professional advice. Great to hear of a charity filling a need.
