MAYOR HURLEY IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT FELLOWSHIP BREAKFAST
Burnaby’s Rotary clubs got together at the Executive Inn over a breakfast recently to celebrate decades of service in their community. The occasion featured a presentation from each club about their valuable work bettering the lives of various disadvantaged citizens in the community. Mayor Mike Hurley added his thoughts and experiences noting the work of the city and other service organizations that complement Rotary’s initiatives.
Rotary’s District Governor John Berry was present at the meeting along with most of the members of the three clubs - along with their guests and Rotary’s more youthful branch, Rotaract. The organization’s motto “Service Above Self” was duly exemplified by the examples presented. As an example, two of the clubs sponsor their “Coats for Kids” and “Boots for Kids” fundraisers with their obvious beneficiaries. It was interesting to note the mayor’s comment about his early life in a large family where boots were handed down from one sibling to the next as soon as their feet fitted - despite the lack of comfort. He had to make do with what he got and consequently his feet suffered. He appreciated the fact that new boots given to students were being properly fitted.
