Service Projects - International
The most successful and sustainable Rotary service tends to fall within one of the following six areas:   Peace and conflict prevention/resolution; Disease prevention and treatment; Water and sanitation; Maternal and child health; Basic education and literacy; Economic and community development.  These areas are specifically relevant when applying for Future Vision Grants.
The Rotary Club of Burnaby - Deer Lake is a co-partner in two different international projects.
Medical Camps in Uganda - partnering both financially and hands-on with the Indo-Africa Charitable Society (www.indoafricacharity.com) club members have participated in medical camps in Uganda.  Working with professionals including international and local doctors, up to 1,500 patients were seen daily by a small team of volunteers.  The areas of service provided included: dental, pediatric, gynecological, optical, pharmaceutical and general medicines.  The need was overwhelming. As a consequence the lineups were long and therefore the patients were provided with food and beverage during the day.  While in Uganda, volunteers had opportunities to visit and contribute to orphanages, water wells, blind schools, blood camps, participate in parades, meet with Rotarians and Rotaractors while learning about the culture of the regions.
Sound of Hope Bali - partnering with 4 other Rotary Clubs, the Rotary Club Burnaby - Deer Lake contributes to the Sound of Hope Bali - a self sustaining educational project for the hearing impaired youth of Bali.  The concept of this project is to create a self-sustaining learning and apprenticeship environment that will enable the youth to gain a variety of trade and life skills.  This school with provide the education needed to enable deaf students to obtain a good job and provide for their futures.  Without a good education the children's futures are dim.  Each February & March there is a cultural opportunity to visit the school, staff and provide support to the project.  Additional hands-on opportunities are expected in the near future.  Check out the website for more information: http://soundofhopebali.com.
